feral pig w/4 lower tusks. how rare?

last May i shot a feral pig on my farm here in Hawaii. Aside from being a big boar (200+ lbs) this one was a bit odd in that it had four lower jaw tusks. So far I haven't had any confirmed other reports of four tusk pigs. So I'm wondering if any of you have come across this in pigs? If so can you tell me where?

I'm mostly curious from the viewpoint of: Freak mutation vs. common occurrence in the species. I'm not interested in selling the skull and if people are interested I'll put up a picture sometime.

thanks,
New (to me) Cleaning Technic

Have to share this from a yahoo list I am on called Skulls. Great group for info on anything about skulls and identification etc. Haven't tried the method myself but think I am gonna pull my full fox from the masceration bin and give it a whirl ....

<snip>
Take your animal- skin it- gut it- then drop it in a rubbermaid tote with a snap on lid sandwiched between layers of horse manure. 4-6 inches below it- the same above it . Maybe mulch it up first. Keep it a little moist - put the top on - stick it in the corner of your classroom and 3 months later -your students can do an archeological dig in the rubbermaid tote and excavate a clean skeleton from what looks and smells like grass clippings and compost . The bones will be clean and degreased. They may need to be bleached if you want them whiter. I am a member of a zoo-archaeology group in Alaska ( ACZ ) and I have them processing a bunch of skeletons this way . The few I have done this way came out pretty good. Yes it takes 3-4 months but Horse poop is cheap and the convenience factor is priceless.
<snip>

happy cleaning

Well I have received via mail in the US cats from a taxidermist that had gotten hers from a friend who worked for the spca in Tx but here in England where I am living now I have found they are much more liberal with things that are dead. You can pick up road kill without any threat of criminal charges as long as you are not the one that hit it. You can also call the local slaughterhouse as I did on Thanksgiving and purchase skinned only sheep, horse and pig heads (can't get cow (pout).

So sitting out in the garage is three horse heads one sheep and one pig - don't worry it is snowing here so I can't see them beginning to smell for a while - this is gonna be a major feat accomplished once I have the finished skulls. :)

Why do you love skulls? How many people collect them? I notice that some collect animal skulls. My particular collecting interest is Human skull items. Either made from or depicting the Human skull. I have no idea what the fascination is really but it's the only collection I have kept up with any consistency through the years. I have about 5 or 600 hundred skull and skull related items ranging from hotwheels cars to yo-yo's, lollipops, beads, photographs. etc.... When I get some time and get the rest of my collection up I'll post some pics.

tibetan monkey skull

hi guys. i bought a "tibetan monkey skull" at a flea market a couple of weeks ago. its decorated in the traditional way (i'll try to post a pic soon) but i did some research and I read that most of the "monkey skulls" that come out of tibet are actually baby lamb skulls mass produced but people in india. i looked up a bunch of monkey skulls and baby lamb/sheep skulld and the one i have seems to match a couple kinds of the monkey.
i know that this type of thing isnt supposed to be mported if it is the real thing. does anyone know anything about this?

I am considering selling a couple of my air dried (feather and all attached) skulls They are Jack Daw and Crow from England. I checked into it and true you can not sell American Crow things but these are English and there is no laws from selling them here in the states (Collecting is legal in England - in fact there is open season year round there on crows in england but these two are from road kill - I don't kill things). They might be in my album - if not I will post pictures of them if needed - the one with skin only I am keeping (the other two have feathers - oh and they are incredibly soft). I also have wings and feet (the feet make great talismans) - these are all from English roadkill.

I have some other skulls from England - Badger Pheasant Duck Wood Pigeon Fox Rabbit etc .... I would consider selling also, if there is any interest. I am moving back over there in the fall and will be able to collect more when the occaions arise so I am wanting to let these go. All my American skulls (cats dog etc) except for a few will be going with me (like my bigger cow and deer ones will be given to fellow family bone enthusiasts. Feel free to private message me or post here and I will message you.

Hope this post is acceptable - Cheers
G~

Hi all,

I was fortunate enough to find a partially decomposed gecko this evening, but I haven't got a colony of beetles to let loose on this specimen.

Any ideas how i can transform this partially decomposed/dried lizard into a clean skeleton? The bones are tiny and delicate so i hesitate to do anything that could break them.

ideas?

thanks,
30 hours to clean cat skulls

Well after watching 'da boys' did such a fast cleaning job on a 14lb turkey neck I decided to try a couple small cat skulls which I received skinned. I cooked them in a crock pot outside for a few hours. Once they had cooled (actually for a couple days - just didn't have the time to get them out) _ threw them in with my dermestid beetles (not removing any additional flesh from them) and left at noon on friday to go to work then to some friends in san mateo .... just returned an hour ago and both the kitty skulls look sparkling .... going to leave them in until morning to make sure the brain cavity is cleared. Soaking in a bit of peroxide should finish off the project nicely.

Wahooo cat skulls in 30 hours ... ya know that means I can cook them up those slightly larger mammal skulls out masc'ing which I am looking at months of waiting because of how cold it is.
missionary attitude about bones and dead things

it was really nice finding this tribe, i've collected bones for as long as i can remember, and wish everyone would share my love for them. they are like holy grails in my opinion, i love the energy of animal bones, i never kill, but get every dead animal i can find. i also keep the skin (if it's not starting to rot) to make drums. when i have guest over i usually wind up pushing a skull in their hands and and saying isn't this wonderful, but most people seem to be a little less than interested, and i just don't get it. so i was wondering what all of you feel toward bones? reverence? scientific? art objects? or whatever.

.... skinning and fleshing a baby emu!

I had a blast this weekend down in Riverside CA. Went down to visit a genetleman who is into dead things (skulls bones and everything related) and found dead heaven. Went down to help him clean out a couple full of dead chest freezers but was hampered by the rains (LA/Southern CA). But a few days before I arrived one of his baby emus died. He and I as a team (because it was my first time) skinned and fleshed it in order to dry it for the dermestids to finish the cleaning. Hegave me the full skeleton once it has finished. It was sooo cool. All I have ever skinned is a rabbit (which ended up in a nice english style rabbit stew). We didn't get much else done because of the rains but I can't wait to go back and reattack those freezers (which contain multiple reptiles) hopefully in early March.

G~

Oh and if your ever get a chance try emu eggs they taste just like chicken eggs but will feed 4 people easily. Only bummer is you need a drummel tool to get the stuff out :)

Hawaii -> US Mainland regulations?

hi all,

i'm about to travel to the mainland with a feral pig skull. Since there is a USDA inspection when you travel from Hawaii to the mainland I was wondering if anyone on this tribe has dealt with transporting bones in their luggage and these particular gov't monkeys?

I've let the tropical maggots do most of the cleaning (one week, skull buried under a thin layer of dirt) and I guess the next step is peroxide (do most folks use the stuff from the drugstore?).

Anyone have any data on the USDA requirements for Hawaii -> US Mainland bone transport?

Pigboy

ps. anyone who has Hawaii specific bone requests please send me a message and as I kill pests I will save specimens for you (i'm not killing any native Hawaiian species, just invasive pest animals such as pigs, mongoose, mynah birds, cardinals, etc). and I'd want to trade for this stuff since it's fun to get new bones.

The forehead is the thickest part of the skull, used for delivering headbutts...If you punch someone in the forehead, you are an idiot.
The tiny, jagged lines that traverse the skull are hairline cracks filled with cartilage...this miraculous feature allows for the expansion and contraction of the skull.
Golgotha is Hebrew for Skull....Calvary is Latin for Skull.
I have a rather large skull...nearly 8" in diameter...it has been fractured.

Hi all,

I'm going to New Zealand next March and will be doing a "skull swap" with a biologist down there...do any of you have experience with where to get export permits for skulls going out of the country?

I've got the NZ export permits handled - that gets done through the peope in NZ.

Thanks,
Spencer

Hi! I'm new here. I really appreciate skulls and the use of the skull as an element/subject in art. I collect them as well...real animal skulls, ceramic, toy, carved, beads, etc. Anyways...I'm an artist and often use small bones and teeth in some of my work...sculptures and found-object assemblages. I was wondering if anyone at this community would know where I can pick up some animal teeth and bones. Perhaps some sources outside of ebay? Thanks!!
