last May i shot a feral pig on my farm here in Hawaii. Aside from being a big boar (200+ lbs) this one was a bit odd in that it had four lower jaw tusks. So far I haven't had any confirmed other reports of four tusk pigs. So I'm wondering if any of you have come across this in pigs? If so can you tell me where?

I'm mostly curious from the viewpoint of: Freak mutation vs. common occurrence in the species. I'm not interested in selling the skull and if people are interested I'll put up a picture sometime.

<snip>
Take your animal- skin it- gut it- then drop it in a rubbermaid tote with a snap on lid sandwiched between layers of horse manure. 4-6 inches below it- the same above it . Maybe mulch it up first. Keep it a little moist - put the top on - stick it in the corner of your classroom and 3 months later -your students can do an archeological dig in the rubbermaid tote and excavate a clean skeleton from what looks and smells like grass clippings and compost . The bones will be clean and degreased. They may need to be bleached if you want them whiter. I am a member of a zoo-archaeology group in Alaska ( ACZ ) and I have them processing a bunch of skeletons this way . The few I have done this way came out pretty good. Yes it takes 3-4 months but Horse poop is cheap and the convenience factor is priceless.

You can pick up road kill without any threat of criminal charges as long as you are not the one that hit it. You can also call the local slaughterhouse as I did on Thanksgiving and purchase skinned only sheep, horse and pig heads (can't get cow (pout).

So sitting out in the garage is three horse heads one sheep and one pig - don't worry it is snowing here so I can't see them beginning to smell for a while - this is gonna be a major feat accomplished once I have the finished skulls. :)

I checked into it and true you can not sell American Crow things but these are English and there is no laws from selling them here in the states (Collecting is legal in England - in fact there is open season year round there on crows in england but these two are from road kill - I don't kill things). They might be in my album - if not I will post pictures of them if needed - the one with skin only I am keeping (the other two have feathers - oh and they are incredibly soft). I also have wings and feet (the feet make great talismans) - these are all from English roadkill.

I have some other skulls from England - Badger Pheasant Duck Wood Pigeon Fox Rabbit etc .... I would consider selling also, if there is any interest. I am moving back over there in the fall and will be able to collect more when the occaions arise so I am wanting to let these go. All my American skulls (cats dog etc) except for a few will be going with me (like my bigger cow and deer ones will be given to fellow family bone enthusiasts.
Any ideas how i can transform this partially decomposed/dried lizard into a clean skeleton? The bones are tiny and delicate so i hesitate to do anything that could break them.

I cooked them in a crock pot outside for a few hours. Once they had cooled (actually for a couple days - just didn't have the time to get them out) _ threw them in with my dermestid beetles (not removing any additional flesh from them) and left at noon on friday to go to work then to some friends in san mateo .... just returned an hour ago and both the kitty skulls look sparkling .... going to leave them in until morning to make sure the brain cavity is cleared. Soaking in a bit of peroxide should finish off the project nicely.

Wahooo cat skulls in 30 hours ... ya know that means I can cook them up those slightly larger mammal skulls out masc'ing which I am looking at months of waiting because of how cold it is.

I had a blast this weekend down in Riverside CA. Went down to visit a genetleman who is into dead things (skulls bones and everything related) and found dead heaven. Went down to help him clean out a couple full of dead chest freezers but was hampered by the rains (LA/Southern CA). But a few days before I arrived one of his baby emus died. He and I as a team (because it was my first time) skinned and fleshed it in order to dry it for the dermestids to finish the cleaning. Hegave me the full skeleton once it has finished. It was sooo cool. All I have ever skinned is a rabbit (which ended up in a nice english style rabbit stew). We didn't get much else done because of the rains but I can't wait to go back and reattack those freezers (which contain multiple reptiles) hopefully in early March.

G~

Oh and if your ever get a chance try emu eggs they taste just like chicken eggs but will feed 4 people easily. Only bummer is you need a drummel tool to get the stuff out :)

I've let the tropical maggots do most of the cleaning (one week, skull buried under a thin layer of dirt) and I guess the next step is peroxide (do most folks use the stuff from the drugstore?).
Anyone have any data on the USDA requirements for Hawaii -> US Mainland bone transport?
ps. anyone who has Hawaii specific bone requests please send me a message and as I kill pests I will save specimens for you (i'm not killing any native Hawaiian species, just invasive pest animals such as pigs, mongoose, mynah birds, cardinals, etc). and I'd want to trade for this stuff since it's fun to get new bones.
